Hazardous materials / Waste management

Hazardous waste such as waste oil and diesel should be stored in sealed containers and placed on an impermeable surface and transferred to the nearest regional waste management facility for final disposal. Stored containers should be regularly inspected to identify any leakages. Conspicuous warning signs e.g. ‘No Smoking’ (should also be posted around hazardous waste storage and handling facilities. Take precautions measures on the field while engaging with the chemicals or liquids. Take all the actions to minimize exchanging, re-filling or drainage of chemicals of the shore. Implementation of this measures will greatly minimize the chances of accidental spill during the construction, transportation and storing

Noise

Ensure construction activities occur between 8 am and 6 pm. Construction workers should wear ear muffs when using machinery that produces significant noise and while undertaking welding and drilling activities. These measures will improve the chances of ensuring the peace and natural ambiance. A well-planned work schedule, Project manager and noise cancellation equipment’s.

Air quality

Transport of materials from one location to another should be in covered vehicles or wheelbarrows. Transportation should be at low vehicular speeds and loading and unloading should be conducted within the site. Materials that are stockpiled at the temporary site for a long period of time should be covered to minimize the impact of dust generation due to windy conditions.

Water

Limit dewatering to only what is necessary and avoid over-pumping. Monitor groundwater levels regularly in nearby wells and sensitive areas. Monitor salinity levels of both extracted and nearby groundwater throughout the activity. Reduce pumping rates if signs of saline intrusion are detected. Seal well casings properly to avoid vertical mixing of saline and freshwater. Use sediment filtration systems (e.g., silt traps, sedimentation tanks, geotextile filters) before discharging water. Stabilize discharge areas with gravel or vegetation to minimize soil loss.

Waste management

Construction waste produced should be reused for the project as much as possible. Any remaining C&D waste shall be sent to Thilafushi. Reducing the waste generation and making sure that there is no dumping site left out after the demobilization. Instruction boards, Briefings and Supervisor

Waste management

Place a bin at the temporary site and labor quarter area for the dispose of general waste generated by the workers. Establish procedures for general waste disposal which should include actions to be breached. Waste segregation and collection to make sure proper waste management system is established. Segregation dustbins with labels and Precaution notices

Transportation

Materials shall be obtained from the closest source. Lowers the overall cost of the project. The materials shall be brought in bulk and transported to the site within a single trip where possible. The materials shall be stored at the project site or in close proximity to avoid unnecessary movement of vehicles through the construction phase. Workers will be informed to avoid damaging trees and disturbances to animals and to generally avoid engaging in destructive activities to the environment intentional or unintentional. Reducing the trips would minimize the impact of vehicular emissions and other enroute disruptions of transportation.

Health and Safety

All workers should be provided with safety gear and should ensure that safety gear is utilized at all times. This includes safety hats, boots, glasses, masks, and gloves. Earmuffs shall be provided where equipment or machinery that emits a significant amount of noise is used (welding, drilling etc.). Chemical-Liquid protective gloves should be used when handling any chemicals, waste oil, or other liquid waste. A first aid kit must be purchased and kept on-site at all times. Health and Safety briefings should be given to all construction workers. A safety inspection checklist should be prepared to take into consideration what the workers are supposed to be wearing and monitored monthly and recorded in the monitoring.
